Brooke received her BFA in painting at the U of O in June of 2010 and has continued to be inspired by the every day and surrounding environment. This has brought her to paint primarily on site, or en plein air, capturing both the overlooked spaces as well as picturesque landscapes. She has shown her paintings throughout Eugene’s galleries and public venues, as well as entering regional and national juried exhibitions. Her paintings have been exhibited in New York, California, Virginia, Kentucky, Wisconsin and Oregon, winning so far two juror’s choice awards, one best in show, and one honorable mention.
Says Brooke:
I am currently working on an ongoing body of plein-air paintings of Eugene that includes both the overlooked spaces that we encounter every day, to the picturesque landscapes we expect to see in a painting. The way in which I go about depicting these spaces does not adhere to exactness but rather focuses on the dialogue between observing and responding to my visual senses. Although my subject matter varies, my interest in aesthetics, mark making, and the process of translating ‘truths’ onto canvas is carried throughout my work. The result, I hope, is an honest depiction and experience of a place. I believe that beauty is something that we shouldn’t neglect in our Postmodern time, which is why I have chosen to stay within the traditional realm of representational painting; it will never lose its ability to imitate, satisfy, and illuminate for both the viewer and creator.
